The rise of social media in the Philippines has become a fundamental force in society. It allows people to easily consume and share content, and it has become a platform for political actors to sway public opinion.

This issue is also a threat to the democratic process since it can make people defend their erroneous beliefs. At the end of 2020, it seemed hard to imagine a worse year for misinformation on social media, given the intensity of the presidential election and the trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2022 Philippine elections are set to be a tough fight due to the circulation of misinformation on social media platforms. As a result, the right balance of outrage and misinformation could be crucial in deciding the outcome of the race. Politicians, media, and voters have all been made scapegoats for the negative effects of "fake news," despite the fact that few of them actually spread misinformation.
